LePage's Contradictory Statements, Bullying Show Need for Investigation

Less than a month ago, the Maine People's Alliance called for an investigation into what led DHHS Commissioner Mary Mayhew, a former corporate lobbyist, to provide incorrect budgetary information to the Appropriations Committee, leading to massive cuts to health care programs protecting Maine's most vulnerable.

Over the weekend, Governor Paul LePage made a series of contradictory on-air statements about what happened at DHHS and personally attacked those who have asked for answers. MPA believes this reinforces the need for an independent investigation.

"Rather than deny that there was a cover-up, LePage has confirmed it, and spun a new conspiracy theory about who knew what when. I think it's obvious that more needs to be done to get to the bottom of this," said Maine People's Alliance health care organizer Jennie Pirkl. "The budget of DHHS isn't just a bunch of numbers on a page. We're talking about real pain for real people and actual human lives. If commissioner Mayhew withheld vital information from the committee, she should resign."
