Tribal Sovereignty

Maine tribes predate Maine statehood. For millennia before the United States became a country, indigenous tribes across Maine lived and existed as sovereign governments. After centuries of genocide, discrimination, and abuse against indigenous communities across this country, tribal leaders and goverment officals at the state level are leading efforts to affirm, restore, and enhance the sovereignty of Maine tribes.

MPA supports supports the inherent sovereignty of indigenous tribes in Maine and advocates for policy changes to ensure they enjoy the same rights, privileges, and immunities as other federally-recognized tribes across the country.
