From its founding, MPA has fought to create a clean, toxic-free environment and to hold corporate polluters responsible for their actions. For more than 20 years, dedicated MPA members have led a campaign to force the cleanup of tons of toxic mercury and other pollutants generated at the former Holtrachem chemical plant in Orrington and dumped into the Penobscot River, including through a groundbreaking federal lawsuit that is forcing the former corporate polluters to pay to clean up the river and connected ecosystems.
MPA has also worked to make sure the products used by Maine people every day are safe for themselves, their children and their environment, to advance renewable energy and confront climate change and to address environmental degradation that so often places the greatest burden on those with the least privilege and power.
