A Big Opportunity to End the Payday Lending Debt Trap

Last year, activists from around the country, including MPA partner National People’s Action, won a big victory against predatory lenders. After months of public pressure, federal regulators finally cracked down on the big banks, forcing them to stop offering predatory payday products with hefty interest rates of more than 300 percent.

Bettyann Sheats
Bettyann is a veteran and small business owner who lives in Auburn and is running for the House of Representatives in District 64, which includes Minot and part of Auburn. This is Bettyann’s second time running for office.
Bettyann has always been a leader. She graduated from West Point with an engineering degree in only the fifth class that allowed female cadets and served as a helicopter test pilot and maintenance crew chief.

Clock is Ticking for DEP to Take Action on Toxic Phthalates

The Maine People’s Alliance continues to play an active role in the Alliance for a Clean and Healthy Maine (ACHM), a coalition of environmental and public health groups working to ensure Maine’s children are protected from dangerous chemicals lurking in everyday products. This year, the coalition kicked off an aggressive grassroots campaign to force the Maine Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) to take action on a set of chemicals called phthalates (pronounced thal-lates).
