"Here's to Your Health" fundraiser

Mainers gather to kickoff campaign to create awareness about unnecessary toxic chemicals in consumer products

LEWISTON—The Maine People’s Alliance and the Environmental Health Strategy Center, joined by a host committee of community members, held an Organic Wine and Organic Chocolate tasting event Thursday night to highlight their campaign for Environmental Health. Callahan Art Preparatory Services and Atelier Opulesce hosted the event at their Canal St. location. Attendees tasted several outstanding organic red and white wines as well as organic chocolates and hors d’oeuvres donated by local businesses. Organizers presented a short program stressing the critical issue of toxins in our homes, workplaces and environment.

“Many Lewiston and Auburn residents know about the dangers of lead paint in older homes and apartments. But not enough people know that toxic chemicals are harmful to our health and are found in thousands of everyday products like televisions, carpets, and cosmetics—products that we consider safe. We’re here tonight to kickoff a campaign to create awareness about these persistent chemicals,” said canvass director Jenna Vendil of the Maine People’s Alliance.

Speakers also noted the connection scientists and medical professionals are making between increased cancer rates, childhood developmental disabilities and human exposure to toxins. Fortunately, up and coming Green companies are developing natural, non-toxic alternatives to these manufactured products.

“We know that in many cases there are safer, affordable alternatives available. It's time for companies to start producing and using them. We need a comprehensive chemicals policy that will ensure the public is protected,” said Steven Taylor of the Environmental Health Strategy Center.

Both the Environmental Health Strategy Center and the Maine People’s Alliance are part of the Alliance for a Clean and Healthy Maine, a statewide coalition of organizations fighting against the negative health impacts associated with toxic chemicals. The Environmental Health Strategy Center frames toxic pollution as a public health issue, focuses on proven solutions and draws strength from both the environmental and public health movements with offices in Augusta and Portland. Maine People’s Alliance is a statewide citizen-action group with offices in Bangor, Lewiston and Portland working on health care, affordable housing, environmental health and civic engagement.
