Maine People's Alliance Seeking Community Organizer

The Maine People’s Alliance (MPA), a statewide grassroots community action organization with a membership of 32,000 households, is currently accepting inquiries to fill a community organizer position. This quickly growing organization is one of the most powerful statewide groups of its kind in the country. MPA has played a major role in some of the nation’s most progressive policy reforms including: Maine’s first-in-the-nation Clean Elections and Toxics Use Reduction laws, the 2003 passage of the Dirigo Health program, and the defeat of dangerous tax reform ballot initiatives in 2004, 2006 and 2009.

The “Health Care and Greater Portland Community Organizer” responsibilities include recruitment and leadership development of members in the Greater Portland area and lead responsibility for organizing MPA’s statewide health care campaign.

A qualified applicant should:

  • Have a commitment to MPA’s organizing model, which focuses on leadership development and building a permanent, powerful organization, and experience working with volunteers.
  • Possess excellent writing skills and an ability to meet writing deadlines.
  • Have experience running a successful membership-recruiting field canvass.
  • Demonstrate skill and experience in communications and working with the media.
  • Have experience and working knowledge of Microsoft Word, Excel and Outlook.
  • Have basic knowledge of the health care campaigns in which MPA is active and an understanding of grassroots lobbying methods.

This position is permanent and full-time (40 hrs/wk), with comprehensive benefits and competitive salary based upon applicable experience. MPA is an equal opportunity employer. Please send a one page letter of interest, resume, a short writing sample, and 3 references (who can address organizing experience and skills) via e-mail to Jesse Graham, Executive Director, at jesse@mainepeoplesalliance.org.
