Permanent positions Small Business Community Organizer The Maine People’s Alliance (MPA), a statewide grassroots citizen action organization with a membership of 32,000 households, is currently accepting inquiries to fill a community organizer position. This quickly growing organization is one of the most powerful statewide groups of its kind in the country. MPA has played a major role in some of the nation’s most progressive policy reforms including: Maine’s first-in-the-nation Clean Elections and Toxics Use Reduction laws, the 2003 passage of the Dirigo Health program, and the defeat of two dangerous tax reform ballot initiatives in 2004 and 2006. The “Small Business Community Organizer” responsibilities include outreach/recruitment, leadership development/training, and mobilization of small business owners to engage targets, decision-makers and the media in support of progressive health care reform. A qualified applicant should: √ Have a deep commitment to a vision of racial, social, and economic justice and to building progressive power, and have basic knowledge of MPA’s health care campaigns √ Embrace MPA’s organizing model, which focuses on leadership development and building a permanent, powerful organization, and have experience working with volunteers √ Possess excellent writing skills and an ability to meet writing deadlines √ Have experience and strong canvassing (door knocking) skills √ Demonstrate skill and experience in communications and working with the media √ Have working knowledge of Microsoft Word, Excel and Outlook √ Be willing to travel around the state on a regular basis and work flexible hours This position is permanent and full-time (40 hrs/wk), with comprehensive benefits. Starting compensation is a minimum $25,000, and starting salaries above this level are determined using MPA’s staff salary scale, which is based upon applicable experience.
