Medicare Part D

The controversial prescription drug law known as Part D has been called costly, confusing and corrupt because it was written to benefit drug and insurance companies rather than senior citizens and the disabled. MPA's campaign to fix Medicare Part D calls on Congress to take the following actions:

  • Require Medicare to negotiate lower prices from drug companies, just as the Veterans Administration does for veterans;
  • Eliminate the “doughnut hole” gap in coverage for annual costs between $2,250 and $5,100, which requires seniors to pay all their expenses out of pocket, even as they continue to pay monthly premiums to the drug plan;

  • Allow everyone on Medicare the choice of obtaining their prescription drug plan directly from Medicare--instead of from a private insurance company;
  • Prohibit insurance companies from taking medications off their list of approved drugs during the period when someone is not allowed to move to another plan;
  • Eliminate the penalty for failing to sign up for a plan until the president's Part D disaster is fixed.
