About MPA Health Care Affordable Housing |
Healthcare Achievements Launch of Health Care for America Now! MPA launched a new statewide coalition for the Health Care for America Now (HCAN) campaign, which has given MPA an opportunity to play a new leadership role around health care in the state, setting us up to be able to move forward a stronger statewide effort for universal single payer in the years ahead. Small Businesses Coalition Reaches 1,800 In 2009 we added a full time Small Business Community Organizer, Dean Powers! Dean has helped us build our small business coalition to over 1,800 members and held meetings with congressional staff for Maine’s entire congressional delegation on the urgent need for health care reform Fighting the Anthem Rate Hike We organized huge turnout and rapid response for Anthem rate hike hearings this winter, turning out a large numbers of participants in Portland, Bangor and Gardiner. The unexpectedly large turnout prompted the state Superintendent of Insurance to schedule additional statewide hearings on health care reform and cut the proposed rate increase almost in half. Direct Action on Insurance Profits We have protested at Anthem’s Augusta office twice this year to demand answers and expose their outrageously high profits! Developing Strong Congressional Partners We were successful in securing the support of Congresswoman Chellie Pingree for including immigrants in health reform when it passes at the national level this year. After the recent MPA Rising Tide Awards Dinner, Congresswoman Chellie Pingree tweeted: "I was honored to be honored honored by the Maine People's Alliance tonight...they are working hard on health care!!!" Support For Universal Single Payer The Maine legislature passed a bill endorsing universal single-payer healthcare at the national level (HR 676). National Representation David White, MPA’s Small Business owner extraordinaire, attended the national launch of the Healthcare for America Now Campaign in Washington DC to speak on behalf of all small business owners who support real healthcare reform. Mayday Events Target Senators On May 1, 2009, we traveled all over the state to Senator Snowe and Collins’ offices, rallying at least 250 people and demonstrating the strong support in Maine for a public health insurance option.
