2005: Worked in coalition to pass LD 1034 to fund lead poisoning prevention through a fee on paint manufacturers.

Comprehensive cleanup of Holtrachem site

2005: Secured recommendation from Governor Baldacci and the Maine Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) to move ahead with the a comprehensive cleanup plan for the former HoltraChem plant in Orrington and require owner Mallinckrodt to pay $200 million to truck away 370,000 tons of mercury-contaminated soil from the site... read more

2004: Ran successful Mercury Media Campaign educating public about in- and out-of-state mercury pollution sources.

Governor Baldacci pledges Holtrachem cleanup

2004: Secured pledge from Governor John Baldacci to make cleanup of mercury-contaminated HoltraChem a top priority of his administration.

Recycling of electronic waste

2004: Helped pass legislation mandating the recycling of electronic waste.

Brominated flame retardants

2004: Testified and lobbied for successful passage of a law banning PBDEs, the most toxic forms of brominated flame retardants (BFRs).

MPA defends Maine law requiring recycling of mercury auto switches

2004: Successfully defended Maine law requiring recycling of mercury auto switches against a lawsuit filed by the Alliance of Automobile Manufacturers. MPA won friend of the court status along with three other partner organizations.

Alliance for a Clean and Healthy Maine founded

2003: One of eight co-founding members of the Alliance for a Clean and Healthy Maine, organized to protect public health from exposure to persistent toxic chemicals.

MPA wins citizen suit against Mallinckrodt to force mercury cleanup

2002: Won our citizen suit against Mallinckrodt to force clean-up of mercury pollution of the Penobscot River. The Bangor Daily News editorialized that “the Maine People's Alliance has done a tremendous service to the region by pressing ahead, year after year, with its concern about the health of the Penobscot (8-9-02)...” read more

85 tons of mercury kept out of commerce

2002: Supported successful agreement to keep 85 tons of mercury formally used in production at HoltraChem out of commerce with the eventual goal of permanently retiring it... read more 

Removal of mercury switches

2002: Supported legislation to remove mercury switches and thermostats from commercial products, thereby eliminating these mercury sources in the environment.
