What does membership mean?

MPA has political power because 28,000 Mainers support our work by making contributions each year. The fact that we have hundreds of dues-paying members in almost every legislative district across our state means that decision-makers pay attention to our opinion on important issues.

In addition to giving us political power, members of MPA can expect:

  • To stay informed about how our Senators and Representatives vote each session by reading the voting guides we send out each year
  • To be alerted about urgent actions needed in MPA issue campaigns; when the time comes for a critical vote or a major decision, MPA members can help us by making a phone call, sending an email or writing a letter to the editor
  • To learn about our work on health care reform, toxics use reduction, affordable housing and more. We call our members 2-4 times per year to share updates on our issue campaigns. Members can also learn about our work by reading The Alliance, MPA’s newsletter, which is mailed to each of our members several times every year.

We promise to minimize the amount of paper we send to your mailbox and we won’t flood you with too many emails or phone calls. We’ll contact you when we have exciting news to share, if we want to hear your opinion about an issue or candidate, or when we urgently need your support for a campaign. Your membership matters to us: almost 90% of MPA’s funding comes from direct public support (as opposed to grants).

Planned Giving
The Best Way To Be a Part of MPA into the Future
People often think planned giving is only for the rich. It’s not! By thoughtful will and trust arrangements, you can take care of those who mean the most to you and continue to support MPA into the future.

Many people underestimate their assets and assume that there’s no need to do estate planning. A person’s worldly possessions include more than just money, stocks and bonds. Equity in a home, personal and group life insurance, deferred employee benefits, the value of a business, real estate investment and other tangible possessions all count, too. Beyond all this is the simple fact that estate planning allows supporters of modest means to make a substantial gift while providing for their families.

Have you already included MPA in your will? Let us know! We are forming a special Bequest Society and we are currently compiling a list of founding members.
